The Hotel Lobby AI trend, explained

The source is a live performance filmed in 2022: Quavo and Takeoff performing "Hotel Lobby" on COLORS, the music channel known for single-color studio sets. Two artists, a matte-orange room, one microphone hanging between them and a camera that barely moves.

In early September 2026, a TikTok showed two cats in the same booth, copying the routine move for move. It spread fast, and the clip turned into a format: keep the room, the mic and the moves, swap in two new faces.

Within days people were posting versions with friends, partners, parents and pets, and celebrity versions followed. By September 23 and 24, music outlets including XXL and The Source were covering it.

The frame is almost empty. With nothing else in the shot, anyone swapped in still reads as the Hotel Lobby video at a glance.

• One color. The flat orange backdrop is recognizable as a small thumbnail, before anyone presses play.
• One mic. The hanging microphone between the two performers anchors the picture and says "performance".
• Two spots. Two fixed positions make it a natural format for pairs: friends, couples, siblings, pets.
• A fixed camera. With no cuts or camera moves, swapped faces hold up much better than in fast-edited clips.
